Veggie trader

Greg Boulos of http://pasa.org passed this on yesterday:

http://www.veggietrader.com/

"What is it?

Wish you could turn your excess plums into lemons, or maybe even a
little cash? Use this site to find neighbors to swap with or sell your
excess produce to. Or if you specialize in growing tomatoes, find
neighbors who specialize in other produce and form networks to share in
the variety. Even if you don't have a garden, Veggie Trader is your
place for finding local food near you. "

This is worth examining as an example of creating barter exchanges on the internet, and possibly making local food growers more findable.

They are using a commercial application that is built in Perl, and was originally designed to be a classified advertisement listing engine http://www.e-classifieds.net/

One drawback here is that this software does not output any kind of rss or portable data, so restricts users to their site. So, veggie trader is a good idea but a restricted implementation, and a decidedly outdated approach (also, veggie trader it is not being used very much currently).

Never the less, some good ideas (classified-style listings) for trading vegatables locally
