AGRICULTURE: A Record 90% of U.S. Corn Crop Genetically Engineered -- USDA -- Greenwire

"U.S. farmers planted a record amount of genetically engineered corn acres this year, according to a survey published yesterday by the Department of Agriculture. Ninety percent of the nation's 80 million corn acres this year is genetically engineered, whether for insect resistance or herbicide tolerance, the National Agricultural Statistics Service said. That's up from last year's 88 percent and from 40 percent a decade ago. "U.S. farmers have adopted genetically engineered (GE) crops widely since their commercial introduction in 1996, notwithstanding uncertainty about consumer acceptance and economic and environmental impacts," the agency said. The agency obtained the data in its June survey for 2000 through 2013. The agency selected random farmers and asked whether they planted seeds that were genetically modified."
