Utne Reader Names Two Local Residents VisionariesNational Magazine Selects Michelle Ajamian and Brandon Jaeger Among 25 People Who Are Changing the World

MILLFIELD, Ohio — Utne Reader, the best of the alternative press, names food activists Michelle Ajamian and Brandon Jaeger as two visionaries who are making the world a better place. They are among 25 people the magazine highlights in its November/December issue.

Ajamian and Jaeger strive to reintroduce staple seed crops to regional farming. They emphasize the importance of growing local grains, beans and oils rather than importing these staples from around the world. Their Appalachian Staple Foods Collaborative works to develop a plan for building a regional system for staple foods, and their Shagbark Seed and Mill is a prototype processing facility for processing and cleaning crops, then turning them into finished products such as cereals and wheat-free flours.

“Throughout the year, as we read and plan issues, our editorial staff and select freelancers compile lists of people and institutions across disciplines that are doing work that challenges the status quo and promises positive, forward progress,” says David Schimke, Utne Reader’s editor in chief.
