Charlotte Muezenberger wrote an excellent piece on one of the recent networking meetings that are catalyzing an agricultural and bioscience industry cluster in NE Ohio.  In an article in the business section of the July 18, 2010 edition of the Wooster Daily Record, she describes the project and some of the research that is fueling the network.  The project is sponsored by the Fund for Our Economic Future and is focused on building collaborative networks of locally owned businesses related to agriculture.  Read th

Embedding learning opportunities into the development of local food systems and ag-bioscience businesses and business clusters is one of several key strategies for enriching local and regional economies.  Any local food system or ag-bioenergy development effort will require significant collaborative skill and effective use of a range of face-to-face and electronic communication tools.    Assuming such a topic to be of general interest, this post introduces the concept of "Stealth Curriculum" to all site users.

I am currently working with a group of high school students on improving the health of their school. Although the project is largely based on their own ideas, I would like to introduce the ideas of urban farming, local foods, etc. to the students.  Ideally, I would like to have them work to develop a garden at school.  If anyone can offer assistance, I'd appreciate it.  Thanks.

Hi all,

I thought everyone would like to hear how a river can get better! The upper Mississippi River is breeming with bald eagles and the tests we did along the way turned up almost NO nitrates from fertilizer run-off.

Paddle for the Planet finds hope on the Mississippi River

The blog post has video and photo slide shows of the four high school juniors that made the amazing 518-mile canoe trip.

Best, andrew

This is far away for those of use in the midwest and further west, but the Food Project is an incredible leader in youth engagement in food systems. I have participated in their workshops before and learned a great deal.   Just passing along this opportunity for young people and their "allies".  -Anne

I'm looking for existing mini-grant programs to support urban farmers to assist with our development of this type of program in the Akron area. I'd appreciate learning about any small grant programs out there, including goals, amount of award, time frame, application process and impacts. Thanks in advance for any light shed.

The growing season for local food in upon us and what better time to celebrate what community partners and the City of Columbus have accomplished. Over the last two years, Columbus has stepped up its efforts at a time of  increasing momentum to increase access to local food. We want to ensure that our kids grow up with healthy weights and that we reverse the trends on childhood obesity and diabetes.

During the past two months, over 100 business ideas and business cases were generated by participants in the current cycle of Ag-Bio Cluster stakeholder sessions underway in Northeast Ohio.  That number will easily double by the end of June when the first phase in the Fund For Economic Future (FFEF) initiative to advance the Ag-Bio business case portfolio concludes.

To: Wayne County farmers and persons interested in starting agricultural businesses

Do you have an idea for starting a new small or large-scale agricultural enterprise or growing an existing business?  Where do you go for resources? Are there other people in the area that have similar or complimentary ideas or businesses? Are there opportunities for these ideas and existing businesses to be brought together fo stregthen both individual businesses or business ideas and the agricultural community in the Northeast Ohio area?

I'm the coordinator of a farm stand project for the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank.

Currently we have 12 farm stands in low income communities. Our project is fairly unique, in that our focus is bringing locally grown produce to low income communities from area farms. Instead of the farmers coming to the market, the stands are managed by non-profit organizations and the food bank delivers the produce to the stands.
